There is an interesting history to the Cambodia casinos that reside just over the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, where gambling hall wagering is against the law. Eight casinos are based in a relatively tiny location in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent area, a 3 to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal capital gained from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of limitations requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mainly Thai; although, financing sources are ambiguous. The borders are ceremoniously open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are apparently necessary to cross, there are methods around this, as is true of many borders.
The original Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary bateau casino, contains one hundred and fifty slot machines and 60 gaming tables. The Naga casino never closes with forty two tables of mini-punto banco, 4 tables of vingt-et-un, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown before long opened. A total of 150 slot machine games and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 slot machines and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 baccarat (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and 66 of the common gaming tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-around vacation and hotel complex that highlights many luxuries on top of the gambling den, which houses ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and eighty eight tables.
