There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling dens that reside just over the dividing line from next door Thailand, in which gambling den betting is against the law. Eight casinos are established in a relatively tiny area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling dens is in a perfect destination, a 3 to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai laborers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The amazing capital acquired from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few restrictions constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is required to be largely Thai; still, funding sources are vague. The borders are ceremoniously open from 09:00 to 17:00, and though visas are supposedly necessary to pass, there are methods around this, as is true of most borders.
The first Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only 1 gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary boat gambling hall, features one hundred and fifty slots and sixty table games. The Naga casino never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, 4 tables of vingt-et-un, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly followed. There are one hundred and fifty slots and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 one armed bandits and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and 96 table games, including eighty seven baccarat banque (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and sixty six of the familiar gaming tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight casinos in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-around resort and hotel compound that contains numerous luxuries aside from the gambling hall, which has 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slot machines and eighty eight tables.
